ISO observations and models of galaxies with Hidden Broad Line Regions ⋆

چکیده
In this paper we present ISO mid-infrared spectrophotometry and far-infrared photometry of galaxies with Hidden Broad Line Regions (HBLR). We also present radiative transfer models of their spectral energy distributions which enable us to separate the contributions from the dusty disc of the AGN and the dusty starbursts. We find that the combination of tapered discs (discs whose thickness increases with distance from the central source in the inner part but stays constant in the outer part) and starbursts provide good fits to the data. The tapered discs dominate in the mid-infrared part of the spectrum and the starbursts in the far-infrared. After correcting the AGN luminosity for anisotropic emission we find that the ratio of the AGN luminosity to the starburst luminosity, LAGN /L sb , ranges from about unity for IRAS14454-4343 to about 13 for IRAS01475-0740. Our results suggest that the warm IRAS colours of HBLR are due to the relatively high LAGN /L sb. Our fits are consistent with the unified model and the idea that the infrared emission of AGN is dominated by a dusty disc in the mid-infrared and starbursts in the far-infrared.

EMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY
A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission li...
متن کاملMid - infrared and optical spectroscopy of ultraluminous infrared galaxies : A comparison
New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classifications – starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) – with classifications from optical spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line regions. The a...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

متن کاملGas cooling within the diffuse ISM of late–type galaxies
We combine observations of spiral galaxies in the [CII] line at 158 μm, made with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer aboard ISO, with previous data from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory to study the origin of this line, which is the main coolant of the interstellar medium at relatively low temperatures. We also use HI and CO(10) observations of these galaxies and estimate the respective line fluxe...
